Bed Guide

At Bed Centre Grimsby we understand that it can be confusing purchasing a new bed or mattress, so we hope our guide will help further your understanding of the technical terms often used when describing a bed or mattress. With the average person spending a third of their lives sleeping - which is equivalent to at least 200,000 hours spent in the land of nod, investing in a quality bed or mattress will help you sleep more comfortable and fulfilling, in turn helping you to make the most of the time you're awake.

Measuring Up

When it comes to purchasing your new bed, nothing should get in the way of you creating the perfect sleeping space, you first need to know how big you can go.

We believe that there is not much point buying a luxury super king size bed with a comfortable mattress, only to find it will not fit in your bedroom. That is why it is important to measure up first. We supply all measurements on our website, so before ordering a mattress or bed please check the dimensions of internal and external access points including doors, corridors, stairs and corners.

Check all dimensions against your desired mattress to ensure access is possible, making sure there is enough height and diagonal depth to accommodate your mattress’s entry and that there is plenty of room to manoeuvre around corners. Check that furniture and fixed obstacles such as radiators will not cause a problem.

Here is a basic chart to the UK standard mattress and divan bed sizes to help you make the most of your bedroom.

Divan Bed Measuring Guide

When purchasing a divan bed with storage drawers you will require at least 55cm of space, to fully open the drawers.

All drawers are approx. 53cm in depth and 22cm in height. The width of the drawer will vary depending on your choice of mini (continental), standard, or large End drawer.

Check Your Home

Using the bed’s widest dimensions, please check it will fit comfortably through all of your doorways, hallways and up any stairs without damaging paintwork.

For health and safety reasons it is the responsibility of the customer to ensure that the route to the bedroom is clear of all objects including stair gates, ornaments and picture frames, and that the items purchased will fit through the stairways and doorways, if not the goods will be left in the hallway and no refunds will be given.

Even if your staircase or doorways are not big enough, we can offer you some options.

Option 1

Zip and Link Beds and Mattresses

Zip and link beds allows you to easily split both the mattress and divan base in two so that it can be delivered to the bedroom of your choice without any problem.

Sturdy zippers are situated at the top and bottom of the mattress to enable the mattress to be joined together securely and safely. (Please note: This is not possible with firm Edged (encapsulated mattresses).

Option 2

Rolled up/boxed mattresses

Rolled up mattresses are gently compressed, vacuum-sealed and smartly packaged, making it a breeze to get into your bedroom. Simply unwrap it and it will expand to its full size and will be ready to sleep on within a couple of hours.

At the Bed Centre Grimsby we offer memory foam, pocket sprung and pocket sprung memory mattresses in all sizes from Single all the way up to Super King size.

Choosing The Right Bed For You

Your bed is usually the largest thing in your bedroom, so will naturally draw the most attention. Because of this, your bed must match your overall design. To ensure you choose the right bed for you, you first need to know what types of bed are available to you.

Day Beds

Day beds are a great option for anyone looking to create a multi-functional, space saving sleeping space in the home. In comparison to a traditional bed or sofa bed, a day bed combines the best qualities of both. Designed to resemble a sofa, day beds have one open side, a back frame for leaning against and two shorter sides that give the appearance of armrests. Day bed frames are designed to be seen and admired, so they come with swirling, elegant metal frames or in regal sturdy wood with heavy under bed drawers for a more traditional rustic look with extra storage options.

Bunk Beds

We have a large range of wooden and metal bunk beds and 3 sleepers which have been designed to be stylish and robust and are available with or without drawers, making these ideal space savers, perfect for sleep overs and an excellent option when entertaining adult guests.

Adjustable Beds

We have been selling and assembling adjustable beds for well over 40 years. Whether you are sleeping, relaxing or watching a late night movie in bed, all of our adjustable beds have a five-fold lever action, providing you with the correct support and comfort to the knees, hips, back, neck and head, helping with swollen ankles, acid reflux and many other medical problems.

Our manufacturers will make a base with or without drawers to a height that meets your needs, along with various memory foam, latex and pocket sprung mattresses to ensure you get the right support.

Our qualified staff assemble all of our adjustable beds, FREE of charge.

Divans

The most popular, yet simplest bed design around is the Divan bed. Made up of two bases held together with a bracket, Divan beds usually come with added storage options underneath. The look is then completed with a matching headboard.

There are two types of Divan bed; each option alters the bed slightly improving durability or overall comfort.

SPRUNG BASE DIVAN BEDS

There are two types of sprung base. The sprung edge and the Firm edge base, both feature internal springs to provide a cushioned support for the mattress, which can make the mattress feel softer.

The divan bases come in a range of colours and fabrics, with storage facilities, such as drawers and ottomans making it a fantastic choice for any stylish bedroom.

Choosing The Right Mattress For You

Choosing a mattress is making an investment in your quality of sleep. You will use the mattress every night for around seven years, so making the correct purchase is extremely important. Making an uninformed choice either as an individual or a couple can lead to problems in the future including back pain or shoulder pain, which in turn can lead to sleep deprivation.

When you start, you need to look at what you want out of a mattress and the reasons why you are looking for a new one. The first choice is to visit your local retailer who can lay you on numerous mattresses providing you with professional advice, enabling you to decide which type of mattress suits you.

By combining state of the art technology with traditional craftsmanship our manufacturers are able to produce high quality, individually made mattresses. Ranging from Open Coil, Posture springing, Pocket sprung, Pocket sprung memory, pocket sprung lamb’s wool, silk and cashmere, Pocket sprung latex, Latex, Reflex foam and memory foam mattresses, including roll-up boxed mattresses. Many of which are available from a small Single 2’6” x 6’3” (75cm x 190cm), Up to a super King size, 6’0” x 6’6” (180cm x 200cm).

Open Coil Mattress

Open Coil is the most common type of springing. There are usually approximately 350 springs in a 5’0” King-size mattress. The springs are positioned in rows and joined to each other at the top and bottom with a spiral helical wire or mesh. They come in a variety of tensions, each of which gives the mattress a different feel. This type of mattress is generally priced from budget to mid range.

Most Open Coil mattresses are of medium to firm feel. A softer or firmer mattress can be made by using different thicknesses of wire. Where you see the term “gauge”, this relates to the thickness of the wire used to make the spring – the lower the number, the thicker the wire and the firmer the feel, so a 12.5 gauge will be a firmer mattress than a 13.5 gauge.

A wide variety of fillings are used in interior sprung mattresses, such as coir fibre, foam, cotton, polyester, wool and hair. At the luxury end of the market, silk, mohair and cashmere or memory are often added. The quality and quantity of filling also affects the level of comfort and, of course, the price.

Pocket Sprung Mattress

Pocket springs are small individual springs in a fabric pocket, hence the name. The number of springs is referred to as the Spring Count and the 5’0” King-size is used for comparative purposes. The springs are usually joined together, either by being tied through the centre of one spring to the next one, or by joining one pocket to the next pocket. This allows each spring to operate individually and to closely follow the contours of the body, allowing the spine to remain in its correct position. Each spring gives individual support and the weight of your body is evenly distributed. This effectively prevents the creation of pressure, particularly at the shoulder and hip areas. You will feel as though you are lying in the mattress, rather than on it. The added advantages of this type of springing are that when one partner turns over in bed the other partner feels little or no movement, and partners of differing weights will not roll together.

Generally speaking, the higher the ‘spring count’ the better the mattress, although the type and quantity of the fillings will also contribute to the overall quality. The springs can be made from different gauges (or thicknesses) of steel, in order to create different firmness. Some mattresses are offered in more than one firmness, for example soft, medium (or regular), firm or even ultra-firm.

Side stitching or encapsulation is a further enhancement to a higher quality mattress. It helps to keep the edge of the mattress firm, by attaching the border to the edge of the spring unit and this increases the life expectancy of the mattress.

Pocket springing is usually used, in higher quality products and this is reflected in the price.

Memory Foam Mattress

This is a new type of foam, the technical term for which is Visco Elastic. It has its own individual feel and moulds to your body using your weight and temperature. It therefore follows the shape of the user and reverts to its original shape when the weight and pressure is removed. It has good pressure relieving properties, is hypoallergenic and is available in a variety of qualities and depths. Different feels, or firmness, can be achieved by altering the thickness and density of the Visco elastic used. Manufacturers also use Visco elastic as a filling to put on top of a spring unit but this will be a much thinner layer and will give a different feel to those mattresses that do not contain any springs. Memory Foam mattresses have the added advantage of not needing to be turned. The latest memory mattresses have cool gel on the top of the mattresses to alleviate any heat issues.

Latex Mattress

Latex is derived from the sap of rubber trees and in its natural form is a truly remarkable material. Latex has a resilient feel with excellent durability, is hypoallergenic with anti-microbial properties, and therefore is beneficial for people who suffer from respiratory problems. Latex is also breathable, so will not overheat and will conform to your body contours. Latex mattresses are also Non-turn, but occasional rotation will distribute the wear evenly

Medical Foam Mattress

The mammoth’s high specification medical grade foam is a technology designed specifically for all shapes and sizes of the human body. At the core of every Mammoth mattress is Medical Grade™ Foam and Posture Cell® technologies, which were designed specifically to improve sleep, ease aches and pains, and restore people back to good health.

Born from UK Healthcare, Mammoth are experts in helping people feel better. Working in partnership with the Chartered society of Physiotherapy, they have eased every day aches and pains and witnessed first-hand the unrivalled healing and health potential of their NHS award winning work.

Reflex Foam Mattress

Reflex foam is used in most mattresses in varying depths. The reason for this is that the foam is resistant to dust mites and is therefore ideal for asthma and allergy sufferers, so long as it is in a full block form and not in an open coil spring mattress. Reflex foam however does not have the temperature sensitive benefits of the memory foam mattresses.

Rolled up ‘Carry Home Mattresses’ are gently compressed, vacuum sealed and smartly packaged, making it a breeze to get into your bedroom. Simply unwrap it and it will expand to its full size and will be ready to sleep on within a couple of hours.
